From November 23rd to 25th, the 8th National University Students GIS Application Skills Contest and Geography Discipline and First-Class Professional Construction Summit Forum were successfully held at Anhui Normal University. Xu Shuai, Xu Jingliang, Li Chaoyue, and Wang Weiyan, who are majoring in surveying and mapping engineering at the School of Land Resources and Surveying and Mapping Engineering, won the first prize in this contest.

The “National University Students GIS Application Skills Contest” is sponsored by the China Geographic Information Industry Association, the Geographical Science Professional Teaching Steering Committee of the Ministry of Education, and the China Geographic Society, which is the highest level and largest university student skills contest in the geographic information education industry in China. This competition was attended by 147 colleges and universities including Wuhan University, Peking University, Nanjing University, Nanjing Normal University, Zhejiang University, and Sun Yat-sen University, with 587 students participating in, which is the largest scale of participation ever.

Since the 18th National Congress of the CPC, General Secretary Xi Jinping has made important instructions on the construction of ecological civilization many times, emphasizing that“Green mountains and clear water are equal to mountains of gold and silver”, ecological environment research is of great significance. The title of this contest is designed around the study of geographical environment. The three questions,“Analysis of Garbage Site Selection”,“Analysis of Animal Migration Ecological Corridors”, and “Development of Wind Turbine Maintenance System”, fully reflect the geographical environment of GIS analytical applications.

SDAEU attaches great importance to the construction and reform of new agricultural sciences, and strives to cultivate application-oriented talents with comprehensive practical and innovative capabilities facing the frontline of agriculture and rural areas. The School of Land Resources and Surveying and Mapping Engineering actively implements the construction of new agricultural sciences, continuously optimizes the practical teaching system, increases the construction of practical training conditions, and establishes remote sensing and GIS communities to strengthen students’ practical ability training. Professional instructors make full use of summer vacations and weekends to guide students to actively prepare for the competition. Students work and practice hard, and GIS application skills have been greatly improved. They have stood out in the competitionfull of masters, and have achieved first-class awards, which is the best result since ever.
